With an unparalleled record of public and military service, legal expertise, and proven leadership, Dan Whitten is prepared to be your voice as the next Porter County Commissioner.

Dan's roots run deep in Porter County. A lifelong resident, he grew up in Portage and graduated from Portage High School before earning his bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal psychology from Purdue University.

Dan honorably served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter flight medic in the Middle East. His experience in the military cultivated his unwavering commitment to public service. Upon returning home, Dan became a full time police officer, rising to the level of Assistant Chief during his tenure.

Dan's passion for justice and protecting his community led him to pursue a law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. Today, he owns and operates the Whitten & Whitten law firm alongside his wife Stacey in Portage and Merrillville.

Dan's dedication to Porter County spans decades of exemplary leadership. He was elected to four terms on the Porter County Council, serving 16 years, the majority as Chairman of the Board. During his tenure, Dan spearheaded the establishment of the Porter County Government Charity Foundation. As its founding Chairman, oversaw the creation of the organization's bylaws and investment policies. The Foundation has gone on to raise tens of millions of dollars to fund critical county projects, infrastructure, and job creation.

A family man, Dan's two children continue to make him proud. His daughter Danielle is a Purdue graduate with a bachelor's in science, while his son Devin holds a PhD in physics from Notre Dame after completing his undergraduate studies at Purdue.

SERVICE. PROTECTION. PROGRESS

Enhancing Public Safety

As a former police officer who rose to Assistant Chief, Dan understands the critical importance of keeping our communities safe. As Commissioner, he will prioritize providing modern training, equipment, and staffing for law enforcement to protect Porter County families. Dan will also invest in community policing initiatives, youth outreach programs, and partnerships with schools, churches, and local organizations to prevent crime and strengthen the fabric of our neighborhoods. As a County Councilman, Dan displayed a strong understanding and support of the public safety community, providing resources, wages and manpower to our Sheriff's Department.

Environmental Leadership for a Sustainable Future

Porter County's natural areas, parks, and lakeshore are economic drivers and priceless community assets that must be preserved for future generations. As Commissioner, Dan will champion sustainable development policies to invest in green infrastructure. He will work closely with environmental groups to protect our air, water, and open spaces while bringing new green jobs to the region.

Services and Support for Our Veterans

Having served honorably in the U.S. Army, Dan understands the sacrifices made by our military members and their families. During his years serving as a County Councilman, Dan fought to provide resources and services to our veterans through the Porter County Office of Veterans Affairs.  As Commissioner, he will make Porter County a model for veteran services, streamlining access to healthcare, education benefits, job placement, affordable housing, and support resources. Dan will work to create a comprehensive veteran support network to ensure no veteran is left behind.
